Żoliborz, the pretty shore
Żoliborz really does come from 'joli bord', the name the Piarist fathers gave their 18th-century estate on the Vistula escarpment. The Mokotów story, Princess Lubomirska's 'Mon Coteau', is more likely a pun on a much older village name, which locals enjoy arguing about.
